SA Man Investigated for US Embassy Bomb Threat
A Soweto-based businessman could face legal repercussions after allegedly sending a bomb threat to the US embassy in Pretoria.
According to reports, Freeman Bhengu is being investigated by the police after making the threat in response to US President Donald Trump’s tweet on land reform.
The embassy tightened security following President Trump’s tweet, in which he directed his secretary of state to “closely study” South Africa’s land and farm seizures, expropriations and the large-scale killing of white farmers.
Sources close to the investigation said the caller had used his cellphone to make the threat, in which he said: “If the US interferes in our affairs, then we will bomb the embassy.”
US officials were able to track the call, and reported the matter to the police in Sunnyside, Pretoria.
When media outlets contacted Bhengu, he admitted: “I did make that bomb threat. Listen, this is about South Africa … one has to be courageous and be brave. The US is bullying us and one has to tell them.”
