SA has selected a film for the Oscars

October 07, 2014

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) have announced that local film, Elelwani has been selected as SA’s official entry into the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 87th Academy Awards next year.

Elelwani was directed by Ntshavheni wa Luruli and tells the story of Elelwani and her boyfriend – who are both madly in love with one another. After graduating, Elelwani introduces her boyfriend to her family and announces that she wants to spend the rest of her life with him. However, things take an unexpected turn when her father refuses as he wants her to marry the local king because of tradition.

The film is based on the novel written by Dr Titus Maumela and it explores the Tshivenda culture. It stars Florence Masebe, Vusi Kunene and Ashifashaba Muleya.

If Elelwani is chosen as one of the nominees by the Academy, it will join two other SA nominated films in the same category such as Tsotsi – which ended up winning in 2006, and Yesterday – which was nominated in 2005.
