SA Domestic Worker Uplifts Community with Food Aid
As many families in South Africa suffer economic hardships in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, a domestic worker in Cape Town’s Ottery suburb has created a feeding programme to aid her community.
The country – in which 168 061 people have contracted the virus – is currently undergoing a nationwide lockdown, which has had a severe financial impact upon thousands of families.
To help those in need, Lauren Juries launched a soup kitchen – under the name “Ottery Community Action Now” – at her flat on 17 April.
With the help of her mother and her aunts, the kindly domestic worker manages to feed dozens of hungry community members, including children.
Additionally, she has teamed up with local companies such as Shoprite and YeboFresh to raise money to purchase groceries, fruit and vegetables, and electricity for families in need. To date, she has raised over R69 000.
Juries humbly said of her efforts: “People are struggling to get to the next day without food … I am just doing my best to help.”
