SA Box Office Top 10 overview
The South African Box Office Top 10 is out, so read on to find out who the 10 most popular films in the country are.
As expected, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 clinged to the number one spot for a second weekend in a row as the penultimate chapter in popular franchise sets up events for the final instalment set for release in November of next year. Mockingjay – Part1 is currently sitting at R9 745 287 after almost two weeks of release. (Read our stellar review of the film here.)
Horrible Bosses 2 debuted at number two as the comedy sequel follows a similar pattern to the original film but goes in a slightly different direction as the three friends Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day) decide to launch their own business as they are fed up working for a boss. When businessman Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz) swindles them in an attempt to gain control of their business, they end up in financial trouble and attempt to kidnap Hanson’s son Rex (Chris Pine) to get the ransom money. Things go awry as Rex has himself kidnapped in an attempt on joining the trio in taking down his father.

Local film Leading Lady enters at number 3. The film’s plot follows a British Actress who enlists the help of an Afrikaner farmer to help her prepare for a role in an Afrikaans film in exchange of her to organise and direct an annual concert at the farm.
Strangely enough, Spud 3: Learning to Fly opened at number four despite its popularity. Maybe the third instalment’s lack of promotion had something to do with this. (Read our review here)
Comedy sequel Dumb and Dumber To moves down to number five and sees Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) – the two dumbest people around continue their weird antics as they discover that Harry has a daughter he never knew he had.
The Boxtrolls debuted at number six. This stop-motion animated film follows the Boxtrolls who are lovable creatures living underground. Most of the townspeople believe them to be evil monsters bend on kidnapping children and hire an exterminator to wipe them all out.
