SA Box Office: The kiddies rule
It’s 2015 and the first local box office numbers for the year are in. Looks like it’s being dominated by the kiddies as Paddington debuted at number one while animation film Big Hero 6 was the runner up.
Based on the fictional literary character, Paddington follows a bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) who ventures to the city in search of a home. He’s taken in by the Brown family, but things take an unexpected turn when he becomes the target of a museum taxidermist (Nicole Kidman).
Disney’s Big Hero 6 on the other hand is an action-packed animation film as it follows a superhero team and their inflatable robot who attempt to take down a mysterious figure with evil intentions.
Newcomers Into the Woods and The Judge debuted at number six and nine respectively with the former being a fairytale musical starring Meryl Streep as a witch and the latter being a courtroom drama starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall.
The oldest film on the chart is without a doubt The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies which is still sitting in the top five at number four. The final chapter in the trilogy has so far accumulated a whopping R22,067,895 in South Africa alone.
