A former Rwandan hotelier has been arrested on charges related to terrorism.

Paul Rusesabagina – a Hutu man and former hotel manager – achieved prominence during the East African country’s 1994 genocide, after he sheltered over a thousand Tutsi refugees at the Milles Collines Hotel in Kigali.

Rusesabagina and his family entered Belgium from Rwanda in 1996 as asylum-seekers.

The 66-year-old has since become a noted critic of President Paul Kagame, accusing the Rwandan statesman of prolonging his rule, killing opposition figures, and detaining and torturing activists both in the country and abroad.

According to reports, Rusesabagina was arrested in Kigali on Monday, 31 August, under an international arrest warrant. Alongside allegations of financing terror groups, he has been charged with arson, kidnapping and murder.

Rusesabagina’s son, Tresor, says that the charges against his father are false. He also accused Kagame’s administration of having a hand in his arrest.

He said: “My father is guilty of having the guts to speak up. This is political, of course it is. These are the games they play.”
