Rwanda: Record Number of COVID-19 Cases in a Single Day

August 24, 2020

Rwanda’s ministry of health officially recorded 200 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases on Sunday, 23 August.

The number of new infections is the highest within a 24-hour period, and the most seen since the first case reported in March. Of the new cases, 164 are from Kigali, specifically in city markets which were undergoing mass testing.

On the same day, a single person died and the deceased was identified by the ministry as “a 71-year-old Rwandan.”

This recent wave of COVID-19 infections has raised concerns that new restrictions might be implemented in the capital city, following a week-long lockdown that was imposed on 17 August.

Rwanda was one of the first sub-Saharan countries to engage in a national lockdown, but recently reopened its borders for tourism. However, schools, sports and mass gatherings remain restricted.

With the addition of these latest cases, the east African nation currently has 3 089 active cases, while 12 people have lost their lives to the virus.
