Rwanda: Jailed Singer Found Dead
A popular Rwandan gospel artist, who was previously jailed for plotting to kill the country’s president, has been found dead in a police cell.
Thirty-eight-year-old Kizito Mihigo was a survivor of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide who promoted forgiveness and healing in his songs. He also sang at official ceremonies attended by Rwanda’s political elite.
In 2015, Mihigo received a 10-year prison sentence after he was found guilty of conspiring to assassinate President Paul Kagame and other senior government officials.
Three years later, Mihigo was pardoned by Kagame. However, he was rearrested last Thursday, 13 February, for allegedly trying to leave the country for Burundi without permission.
According to reports, the singer’s body was found on Monday morning, 17 February, in a police cell in the capital of Kigali.
Authorities say that Mihigo committed suicide, but the majority of the singer’s fans claim that he was murdered in jail.
The investigation into Mihigo’s death continues.
