Roxanne Jooste, from Atlantis to the US
Roxanne Jooste might not the most recognisable name in South Africa right now but the model/actress and businesswomen has been making some international strides.
Born in Atlantis, Cape Town, Jooste, packed up her bags to pursue a career in Los Angeles and after working for U.S International Sports Training Camp, she got signed to Wilhelmina Models who represents some of the biggest celebrities and models in the industry including Kendall Jenner and Chris Brown. Today she is a working actress in Los Angeles with a new film, The Choir Director, coming out in June. We caught up with her and here’s what she had to say:
When did you know you wanted to be entertainment?
Being surrounded by sisters and a brother who are all heavily involved in the entertainment industry is was a given that the "industry" is part of my life. I just always had a passion for being in front of the camera and behind.
People say its the hardest industry to break into, what has been your experience of starting out?
It most certainly was and still is a challenge, but then again it’s worth the tears, sweat, continued rejection and that one yes every couple of months. I stayed in a hostel, a room with 12 people for two years and that was difficult but also the most fun experience of my life. Everyday I wake up and follow the plans/goals I have set for my life and I pray that it’s God’s overall plan for my life.
You have a black belt in karate? Do you still pursue the sport?
Lol, not like I use too… I enjoy watching.
How did you get discovered?
After a few no’s at model agencies including Y-Models, I found myself at the right place at the right time. Milan Kronje saw something special in me as we worked in my first test shoot and he had the agency director come by and sign me on the spot.
What’s the toughest thing one has to learn about modelling?
It’s not always about beauty, long hair or knowing who’s who, but rather timing. When it’s your time, it’s your time!
Tell me about your USA trip so far and what it’s been like?
It’s been challenging, not everyday is filled with lattes or a massage. Lol… Life here is a hustle, everyone is fighting for similar things and all want the role… I stay focused, hungry for success and work at things one day at a time!
How did it change your life?
I’m a lot more focused and see myself as a businesswomen! Everything I do is strategic and everyone on my team as a equal and powerful role.
People say its hard breaking into the US market, How did you manage to sign with Wilhelmina Models?
I’m still working on making a bigger name for myself after a few attempts to get signed to Wilhelmina and even being thrown out of there office by security, let’s just say my persistence and undeniable faith got me signed. Wilhelmina is a great agency, well respected and represent the likes of Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Chris Brown ect…
Tell me about RoXS Trading Enterprises and how it came about?
Roxs Trading Ent. Came about as a result of having a large network of contacts and access to A-lister events and content. I decided that I would supply networks such as VUZU and others who are interested in premium celebrity driven content. My business has been doing well, I just completed the Grammys for VUZU and a new online platform in the U.S called My Diveo which will be launching in March!
What’s next for you?
Growing my business, pursuing my acting and also checkout my movie in June, The Choir Director! So many great shows, content will be heading to your screens in SA from my side.
