Rooney Ruled Out of Spain Match
English striker, Wayne Rooney, has been ruled out of England’s match against Spain on Tuesday at Wembley stadium due to a knee injury.
The English Football Association confirmed that Rooney did not train with the English squad at Tottenham Hotspur’s training grounds this morning because of the ‘minor’ knee injury.
They also revealed that he had returned to club Manchester United for further assessment.
“…The striker sat out this morning’s session at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground as a precaution due to a minor knee injury…[sic] Rooney has been allowed to return to his club for further assessment,” the FA said in a statement.
Rooney was not in the starting line-up for the Spain match anyway, with England’s interim manager, Gareth Southgate saying that he would be rested from the starting line-up and that Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson would act as English captain.
This will be England’s last international match of the year, and Gareth Southgate’s last match as manager.
However, it is expected that the English Football Association will offer Southgate the role of manager on a full-time basis.
