Rooney to be Dropped From England Squad?

October 10, 2016

Various reports are suggesting that England captain, Wayne Rooney, might be dropped from the national squad as England prepare to take on Slovenia on Tuesday.

The news comes after Rooney had a less than desirable performance on Saturday, when England went head-to-head against Malta in another 2018 World Cup qualifier.

England went on to win the match 2 – 0.

However, while England may have won the match, Rooney did not have a good game, and was even booed by the crowd.

Now, it seems that Rooney won’t start for England in Tuesday’s game, and that it is quite possible that either Gary Cahill or Jordan Henderson will captain England.

While there has been no official word from English interim manager, Gareth Southgate, Sky News Sports reporter, Jim White, tweeted that he understands it that Rooney will not start for England.

“…It’s my understanding that Wayne Rooney won’t start in Slovenia – Cahill or Henderson will captain England,” he tweeted.

Rooney has been having trouble getting into top form lately. On club level, he has also started on the bench more than once recently, with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho saying his playing is not up to par as of late.
