Rooney Becomes Man United’s Top Goalscorer with 250th Goal
Wayne Rooney has broken Manchester United’s all-time goal scoring record, and with it earned himself a place in the history books.
Rooney surpassed former Manchester United player, Sir Bobby Charlton, with the all-time goal scoring record. Charlton was the previous record holder with 249 goals.
On Saturday, Rooney broke the 44-year-old record by scoring his 250th goal for Manchester United during the club’s Premier League game against Stoke City.
The goal also proved to be an equaliser for Manchester United, who were 1-0 down for the most part of the game, after Juan Mata unfortunately scored an own goal. However, United fought back with Rooney’s free-kick – that also happened to be his record-breaking goal!
Rooney has received congratulations far and wide, but one of the first people to personally congratulate the 31-year-old superstar, was Sir Bobby Charlton himself.
Charlton attended the game as well, and after the final whistle, went down to the changing rooms to personally congratulate Rooney.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Charlton said that while he is sad that his long-standing record has been broken, he is delighted for Rooney.
“…I would be lying to say that I’m not disappointed to have lost the record…however, I can honestly say that I’m delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books,” he said.
He continued, applauding Rooney’s record as both the top scoring Manchester United player, as well as the top scoring English player:
“…He is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England.”
Rooney himself seemed very pleased with his performance and record-breaking goal, telling reporters that he hopes there are many more goals ahead:
“…I am very proud…it is not something I expected when I joined. I am proud and I hope there is more to come…The players who have played for this club have been world class. I am proud to play for this club and to be all-time goalscorer is a huge honour,” he said.
