Ronaldo Won’t be Prosecuted for Alleged Rape
Portugal’s superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, will not face charges over allegations that he raped a woman at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.
In September 2018, Kathryn Mayorga, who was 25-year-old at the time of the alleged incident, filed a civil case against Ronaldo, accusing him of sexual assault.
The Clark County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that a woman had opened a sexual assault case on 13 June 2009, and was taken to the hospital for examinations but refused to name the culprit, except that he was a European soccer player. As a result, the police were unable to conduct any meaningful investigations.
What is clear is that the soccer star paid Mayorga $375,000 a few months later as part of an out-of-court settlement. In exchange, Mayorga signed an agreement to remain silent forever.
Ronaldo’s lawyer, Peter Christiansen, did not deny the settlement agreement claims but rather acknowledged that the superstar had a consensual sexual relationship with the victim, and it was not rape.
US prosecutors released a statement on Monday 22 July, saying: “The allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming.”
