Ronaldo Handed 5-Match Ban

August 15, 2017

Real Madrid superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been handed a 5-match ban after he received a red card and pushed the referee during Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup match against Barcelona on Sunday.

It was a difficult game for Ronaldo, despite Madrid winning the match 3-1. He was handed two yellow cards, which led to referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea handing him the res, and sending him off.

His first yellow card was for taking off his shirt in celebration of scoring a goal, and the second was for an apparent dive.

After receiving his red card, Ronaldo was so infuriated that he appeared to push Bengoetxea.
Following the highly talked about upset, the Spanish Football Federation announced on
Monday that they had handed the star striker a five match ban; one for the red card and another four for pushing the referee.

Ronaldo’s ban is effective immediately, meaning he will miss the second-leg of Real Madrid’s match against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday.

According to manager, Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid intends to appeal the ban.

“I’m annoyed that Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off, it might not have been a penalty, but still, giving him a card is ludicrous…Let’s see if we can make arrangements for him to be available on Wednesday. I am truly proud of my players, they played well as 10 and really wanted the win. Now we turn our attentions to the return leg and we need to relax,” he said after the match on Sunday.
