Robert Mugabe to be Buried at Home Village

September 27, 2019

After much back-and-forth disagreements between his family and the government, former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, will now be buried at his rural homestead.

Earlier this month, Mugabe – who presided over the southern African nation from 1980 to 2017 – died at the age of 95 at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore.

It was initially suggested that the Zimbabwean government planned to bury Mugabe in the National Heroes’ Acre. Located outside the capital of Harare, it is a burial ground that commemorates the country’s heroic icons.

Although the family reportedly opposed these arrangements, they eventually agreed to have Mugabe entombed at the burial ground.

However, the government announced on Thursday, 26 September, that the deceased statesman will now be buried on Saturday, 28 September, in a private ceremony at Kutama – his home village in Mashonaland West Province.

Mugabe’s family has yet to comment publicly on the change of plans.
