Rihanna Slammed over Controversial Runway Song

October 06, 2020

Rihanna’s recent Savage X Fenty fashion show has been heavily criticised for using a song that samples sacred Islamic text.

Last Friday, 2 October, the 32-year-old Barbadian beauty released the virtual fashion show for her lingerie collection. However, viewers took issue with a song – titled “Doom” – that played as models strutted their stuff right before rapper Rico Nasty’s performance.

Made by London-based producer, Coucou Chloe, “Doom” remixes audio that samples a Hadith – in Islam, Hadiths are sacred texts that represent the traditions or sayings of the prophet Muhammad.

The lyrical portion of the song that played during the show specifically talks about the signs of the Judgment Day, as well as the end of times.

Backlash against Rihanna and Coucou Chloe for using the song soon arose on social media, with one user writing: “Hadith are sacred words of the prophet, they’re used to guide muslims & [sic] are second to only the Quran. rihanna [sic] should know better.”

Although Coucou Chloe has apologised for sampling a Hadith and has pulled the song from streaming platforms, Rihanna herself has yet to comment publicly on the backlash.
