Rihanna Accused of Racism in Mag Cover Row

July 17, 2019

Everyone’s favourite Barbadian songstress, Rihanna, has come under fire recently for a Harper’s Bazaar August 2019 cover photo shoot that saw her wearing an outfit that is distinctly traditional Chinese.

The 31-year-old businesswoman has been accused of cultural appropriation following images surfacing on Tuesday, 16 July, on the Chinese publication’s Instagram account, with the caption describing the look as “western style meets eastern aesthetic”.

The photos show her wearing a blue gown with long sleeves and holding a Chinese fan. Her hairstyle and jewellery are also in tune with her overall appearance.

Many social media users were quick to criticise the publication and the “Umbrella” singer.

One user asked: “As much as I love Rihanna how is this not deemed as cultural appropriation?”

Kim Kardashian West was dragged into the discussion due to her recent “Kimono” clothing range that was named after the traditional Japanese outfit.

Another user defended the photos: “THEY, Chinese people, dressed Rihanna like that [SIC].”

Neither Harper’s Bazaar nor Rihanna have responded to the comments.
