Report: Typhoid Outbreak In Harare

Reports are suggesting that there have been several outbreaks of typhoid on Zimbabwe’s capital city of Harare over the weekend.

According to the country’s state-owned newspaper, The Herald, Dr Prosper Chonzi – who is the Harare City Health Director – revealed that several cases of typhoid had been reported over the last week in Harare.

He said that the cases of typhoid disease had bee reported in the Glen Norah, Hopley and Hatfield areas of Harare.

According to the Health Ministry the disease started to spread through unhygienic food preparation conditions in these areas. He then urged the residents of these areas and the greater Harare to be very vigilant when preparing food and to step up their hygienic efforts.

Chonzi said that basic hygiene practices such as washing hands before meals and treating water at the point of use.

He also said that there was n o reason for mass panic, as an outbreak can only be declare done more than 30 cases have been reported and diagnosed.

He also said that the health departments were taking special precautions to prevent and outbreak of the disease in more areas of the country’s capital.

The last big outbreak of the disease happened in January of 2012, when approximately 900 cases of the disease were reported in Harare alone.
