RC Car Race Coming to the Moon in 2021

December 01, 2020

Racing on the moon sounds like something straight out of a science fiction video game, but sci-fi might become sci-fact next year as two aerospace companies host a one-of-a-kind race planned.

Moon Mark, an entertainment and education company based in Reno, Nevada, has partnered up with Lunar Outpost to sponsor a remote-controlled (RC) car race on the Moon, which is set for October 2021.

A team of high school students – who will be chosen from across the globe over eight weeks to form the final two teams, consisting of five members each – are expected to compete in designing the lunar racers.

And the best part is, is that they will also get to drive the vehicles.

The two RC cars will be deployed to the lunar surface via the Nova-C lander from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch scheduled for late next year.

The lander is the first to be “wholly developed by a private company”, and – besides delivering the car payload – will also survey the Grand Canyon-sized Schroter’s Valley on the Moon.

Justin Cyrus, co-founder and CEO of Lunar Outpost said: “We look forward to enabling racers on the Moon and being a part of the journey to bring space to the world.”
