Rafael Benitez Bids Adios to Newcastle

June 25, 2019

English Premier League (EPL) outfit, Newcastle United, announced that Rafael Benitez’s three-year stint as manager will come to an end when his contract expires this Sunday, 30 June.

Benitez – who had been in charge of the Magpies since 2016 – led the club out of relegation and back into the EPL in 2017, after winning the English Football League Championship against Preston North End FC.

Under the 59-year-old Spaniard’s stewardship, Newcastle finished 10th in their first season back in the Premier League, before securing 13th place last season.

In a statement released on Monday, 24 June, the club confirmed that Benitez will be leaving when his contract expires later this week.

The statement explained: “We have worked hard to extend [Benitez’s] contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with [Benitez] and his representatives.”

With Benitez reportedly being offered a coaching contract worth £12-million-a-year at Chinese club, Dalian Yifang, Newcastle are now looking to find a replacement for the Spaniard.
