R. Kelly Denied Bail
A Brooklyn judge has denied singer R. Kelly’s recent request for bail.
The 53-year-old musician applied to be freed from jail, as he believes his age and hernia surgery make him a high-risk case of contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) amid the ongoing pandemic.
In her ruling on Tuesday, 7 April, federal judge Ann Donnelly, explained: “While I am sympathetic to the defendant’s understandable anxiety about COVID-19, he has not established compelling reasons warranting his release.”
Lawyers of the “Happy People” songwriter argued that he should be allowed to self-isolate away from other Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Centre inmates. However, Donnelly pointed out that there are no confirmed cases of the contagion at the correctional facility.
Due to the outbreak, R. Kelly has been unable to talk with his lawyers.
He was incarcerated after last year’s worldwide broadcast of the damning documentary series, “Surviving R. Kelly”, which contained revelations from women who claimed abuse at the hands of the disgraced artist.
