Questions Surround Anfield After Slot Sacking
Jamie Carragher has expressed immense confusion over Liverpool’s managerial direction following the sudden dismissal of head coach Arne Slot.
Despite the 47-year-old Dutch manager guiding the Reds to their 20th English Premier League (EPL) title in his debut campaign, a disappointing fifth-place finish with just 60 points in his second year prompted owners Fenway Sports Group to take drastic action.
The timing of the post-season review has understandably drawn scrutiny. With former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola now the clear frontrunner to take over at Anfield, Carragher believes the hierarchy missed a massive opportunity by failing to target club icon Xabi Alonso before he recently joined EPL rivals Chelsea.
“If you were going to change it, why was it not for Alonso?” the 48-year-old Liverpool legend asked during a recent interview on “The Overlap” podcast. “With Alonso, you have an incredible playing CV.”
Carragher also voiced strict tactical and dressing room reservations regarding Iraola’s high-intensity system, questioning whether a squad unsettled by Mohamed Salah’s public fallout with Slot can adapt to a relentless pressing game while managing a gruelling multi-competition schedule.
