Polio Epidemic: WHO Confirms 3rd Case In Nigeria

September 06, 2016

The World Health Organization has announced the third, official confirmed case of the polio disease in Nigeria.

The latest case of polio has affected a young toddler.

The organization also confirmed that the young toddler is residing in an area of Nigeria that has recently been liberated from terrorist organization, Boko Haram.

The WHO also confirmed that the toddler had been crippled by the disease.

Nigeria was declared polio-free last year, but aid workers and other organizations believe that the virus had been spreading throughout the country undetected, as it has been difficult to monitor the spread of such a virus with so many of the regions in Nigeria being controlled by Boko Haram.

The Boko Haram jihadi extremists are vehemently against – what they call – Western medicine, such as polio vaccinations and treatments.

The Rotary Club, in association with the WHO, have started an emergency polio vaccination drive across Nigeria.

Two other cases of polio was discovered by the Rotary Club last month at a refugee camp.

The refugees were both fleeing from areas that were controlled by Boko Haram.
