Pogba: Racist Insults Can Only Make Me Stronger

August 26, 2019

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, has spoken out after he was recently subjected to racial abuse by social media trolls.

During the Red Devils’ match against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Monday, 19 August, Pogba’s penalty shot was saved by Wolves’ goalkeeper, Rui Patricio. The match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.

Afterwards, scores of so-called fans took to Twitter to heap racial abuse upon Pogba for his missed penalty shot.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday, 25 August, the Frenchman uploaded a photo of himself holding his baby son. In the background, paintings depicting both his late father, Fassou Antoine, and civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr., can be seen.

In the accompanying caption, Pogba wrote: “My ancestors and my parents suffered for my generation to be free today, to work, to take the bus, to play football. Racist insults are ignorance, and can only make me stronger and motivate me to fight for the next generation.”

Meanwhile, Man United are set to meet with Twitter at an unspecified date to discuss how to prevent racism against players from occurring.
