Pep Guardiola: Players Will Choose New Captain
Manchester City coach, Pep Guardiola, says he will let his players decide who will become the club’s new captain next season.
Previous captain, Vincent Kompany, left the Citizens last season to become player/manager of Belgian club, RSC Anderlecht.
Following Man City’s 4-1 win on Wednesday, 17 July, over West Ham in Nanjing, China, Guardiola confirmed in a post-match interview that he will let his players choose Kompany’s successor.
They are expected to make the decision as a group once they are all back from their summer breaks.
He said: “They will choose the captain when we are all together. After they are all back, (they are) going to make a meeting and decide who is going to be captain.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Kevin De Bruyne admitted that he would be keen to become the new skipper: “If the team wants me to be captain, or the club does, I would gladly accept it, but I think that’s something everybody needs to talk about as a team.”
