Palmer Shines as Chelsea Stun PSG to Win Club World Cup
Chelsea capped off a remarkable season by clinching the Club World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Sunday, 13 July.
In a match dominated by the English underdogs in New Jersey, New York, Cole Palmer starred with two goals and an assist as the Blues overran the European champions in the first half.
Joao Pedro added a third before the break, converting after being set up by Palmer, who continues to thrive under Enzo Maresca’s management.
“He’s building something special, something important,” said Palmer, whose performances have elevated him into world-class status.
PSG – who had thrashed Real Madrid in the tournament’s semi-finals – were caught off-guard by Chelsea’s intensity and tactical discipline. Joao Neves was sent off late on for violent conduct, and tempers flared after the final whistle in a heated exchange involving both teams.
Despite the glamour surrounding the final, including a lengthy half-time show and the presence of US president Donald Trump, Chelsea remained focused, securing not only the title but also around £100 million in prize money.
“We won the game in the first ten minutes,” Maresca said. “We set the tempo and we were very good at pressing them.”
Chelsea now look ahead to the English Premier League season next month with renewed belief and silverware in hand.
