Over 3 Million Zimbabweans Have Fled The Country

February 12, 2016

According to new data collected by the National Transitional Justice Working Group in Zimbabwe (or NTJWG), it is reported that more than 3 million Zimbabweans have fled the country.

The report stated that most of the people who fled the country – mostly to neighbouring South Africa or Botswana – fled because of the extreme violence found in some parts of the country.

Naturally, another big reason people are fleeing the country is because of the lack of employment. It is believed that close to 80% of middle-class Zimbabweans are unemployed.

Add to that the fact that the country is running out of food and water at an alarming rate, and it is understandable why Zimbabweans are fleeing the country and seeking refuge elsewhere.

Leader of the Memorialisation Thematic Committee of the NTJWG, Reverend Ray Motsi, said that violence had become the answer to everything that was wrong in Zimbabwe and that years of government mishaps has influenced the tone of the country:

“…In reality, there were many who were wounded by past conflict and were not ready to forgive and forget…That is why we now talk of Gukurahundi, third Chimurenga, Operation Murambatsvina and election related violence, Marange violations and mysterious short and long hand amputations,” he said.

Motsi was speaking at the Transitional Justice Policy Discussion in Harare.

Motsi continued saying that the violence that occurs around election times is being punted by politicians themselves.

He urged Zimbabweans and politicians to try and curb the violence that has left so many Zimbabweans in despair.
