One on one with Shadowclub

September 17, 2014

The first ever TribeOne Dinokeng Festival is less than two weeks away and it has been dubbed the biggest festival in Africa.

Besides an impressive line-up of major international heavyweights being billed to perform including Nicki Minaj, J Cole, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Kid INK, this festival will also see some local acts sharing the stage.

SA rockers Shadowclub will be one of the local acts burning up the rock stage at the TribeOne Dinokeng festival. The band have opened for international rock acts including Kings of Leon and Bloc Party on top of their tremendous radio airplay and growing amount of awards. Shadowclub will be performing on the rock stage called ‘Thunder Valley’ between 26 and 28 September.

Thato Tholo caught up with rockers to get a sneak peak at what fans can expect from their performance and here’s what they had to say.

TribeOne is a massive festival, by the calibre of artists that are going to be performing there, how does that make you feel as a band to be featured on such a huge festival in Africa?

We’re always grateful for the opportunity to perform at any big festival, and to reach listeners who would otherwise never have heard us or seen us. We also love being on stage, so being able to perform on such a large scale is always fun.

You’ll be performing at the rock stage, otherwise known as ‘Thunder Valley’, for those who haven’t seen your live performances how would you best describe your live set?

It’s dynamic, it’s energetic, it’s raw and emotional, it’s driving, it’s in your face and ballsy, it’s slick.

Does the title "rock heavy weights" come with pressure when you take to the stage to entertain thousands of screaming fans?

We don’t really think about it like that. We get on stage, and we do what we do, whether we’re performing to 50 people or 50 000. We put the same amount of energy and feeling into every performance, no matter the size of the stage.

What is your general take on festivals on such a large scale? Do you think SA has a full market of music lovers who’d support festivals such as TribeOne?

Large festivals are good because it means that the audience will be exposed to artists from across many genres, and (in most cases) the standard of performance is high 😉

Lastly, how would you describe the feeling you get as a band when on stage? In one word?
