Onana Secures Trabzonspor Loan After United Struggles
Andre Onana has agreed to a season-long loan move from Manchester United to Turkish club Trabzonspor, bringing a turbulent Old Trafford spell to a pause.
The Cameroon international – who signed on from Inter Milan in 2023 for approximately £44 million – was recruited to transform United’s build-up play. Instead, a series of mistakes, a pre-season injury and the rise of Altay Bayindir led to him losing his place under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
His only outing this term was the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, in which he was culpable for a goal.
Trabzonspor, unbeaten in their opening Super Lig fixtures and chasing leaders Galatasaray, believe Onana can strengthen their title bid. The 29-year-old goalkeeper will reportedly earn more than he did at the Red Devils, thanks to signing-on fees and performance bonuses.
United, however, will not receive a loan payment and no purchase option was agreed to.
Amorim had defended Onana earlier in the year, saying: “If you look at the season I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months.”
With Senne Lammens arriving from Antwerp, Onana’s prospects dwindled, prompting his move to Turkey for a fresh start.
