Oil Pipeline Bombing: Shell Nigeria Not Confirming Attack

September 27, 2016

Another oil pipeline bombing has rocked Nigeria’s southern Delta area on Friday evening, leaving a certain pipeline belonging to Shell Nigeria in tatters.

The bombing completely destroyed Shell Nigeria’s ‘Bonny’ oil pipeline.

The Niger Delta Avengers – a rebel group that has been attacking oil pipelines in the area for over six months – have claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Niger Delta Avengers have said that the attack is intended to serve as a “wake-up call” for the big oil companies that they are not going to slow down in their efforts of disrupting the oil production in the area.

The bombing occurred merely days after the pipeline was repaired following a previous bombing.

Despite the Niger Delta Avengers claiming responsibility for the attack, Shell Nigeria has refused to confirm the attack.

Precious Okolobo, a spokesperson for Shell Nigeria, simply said that he cannot comment on the attack.

Before the attack on Friday evening, there had been a month-long ceasefire between the militants and the government.

However, the Niger Delta Avengers said that they chose to break the ceasefire, claiming that the recent increase in security forces in the area ‘violated’ the ceasefire.

The attack on the various oil companies by militant groups, such as the Avengers, has caused a significant reduction in Nigeria’s oil production – as much as 40%. The Nigerian government has said that this has contributed to the country’s recession.
