Nyama Ye Mbudzi (Goat Meat) Stew
Goat meat stew is one of the most delicious traditional dishes in Zim. So this week, we thought we’d share a simple yet hearty nyama ye mbudzi recipe to enjoy with your family.
While boiling goat meat is the best way to cook it for this dish, it doesn’t give off the best aroma when cooking. However, boiling it with some lemon, garlic and a dash of vinegar, not only gives it some extra flavour, but also cancels out it’s ‘signature scent’.
Now, let’s get cooking!
Ingredients:
500g goat meat
3 slices of lemon
3 garlic cloves (whole)
2 tsp thyme (dried)
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp pure vegetable oil
½ small onion (chopped)
3 large tomatoes (chopped)
1 sprig of fresh basil (to garnish)
Method:
1. Cut and wash your goat meat.
2. Place the meat in a large pot and cover it with water.
3. Add the garlic cloves, thyme, lemon slices and vinegar.
4. Bring the pot to the boil then reduce to a medium heat, and cook until tender.
5. Once the goat meat is tender, discard the lemon slices, and add the vegetable oil.
6. Add the onions and tomatoes and fry for a few minutes.
7. Reduce the heat and simmer for a final three minutes.
8. Garnish with fresh basil.
Serve your dish as is, with sadza, or with mashed potatoes.
