NY Giants Sign Zim-born Maponga
One of America’s biggest football teams, the New York Giants, have signed a new player in the form of Zimbabwean-born Stansly Maponga.
Maponga plays as a defensive end and was signed to the Giants ahead of their Monday night NFL contest at Miami.
Back in 2013, he was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of that year’s NFl Draft.
Maponga grew up in Zimbabwe until he was nine years old when he then moved to the United States. He played rugby as a child in Zimbabwe, which then prompted him to start playing American football in the US.
He was a standout player both in high school and college.
Maponga released a statement thanking the people of Zimbabwe for their support and saying that he will always remain a proud Zimbawean:
“…[sic] Thank you so much for the support on and off the field, I’ve been truly blessed. I am a PROUD Zimbabwean and it is an honor to holster the name of my country on my back every time I step on the field,” he said.
