Nigerian Military Launch Attacks In South
The Nigerian military has confirmed that they have launched attacks in the south of the country, as tensions rise between the government and local militants.
Several local militant groups have recently attacked various oil-producing refineries in the south of the country which has caused Nigerian oil production to steep to an all-time low.
One of the groups – called the Niger Delta Avengers – said have been very active as of late.
The group has claimed responsibility for three separate attacks within three days of one another. The group has also warned the government of ‘something big’ being in the pipeline.
Because of the ongoing attacks by the local militants, the Nigerian military has no launched an offensive in the area.
However, there are some criticisms as to how the military is handling the situation.
According to various witnesses, the military have injured and even killed a number of people in the area.
According to the military, this is not incorrect as they admitted that they attacked speedboats and injured – as well as killed – various militants in the process.
A community group from the area, however, said that the military opened fire on a speedboat that was traveling to Oporoza to help evacuate civilians that were trapped in the violence in the military’s siege of the town.
According to a community leader from the area, the military bombarded the village and demanded that the people hand over the fighters as well as the leaders of the Niger Delta Avengers.
He also said that about 20 000 of the village’s 40 000 people have fled the violence and went into the bush.
