May 12, 2017

A Nigerian minister has told the media that the Nigerian government is working tirelessly to secure the release of the remaining abducted Chibok girls. This news comes almost a week after the government brokered a deal with Boko Haram for the release of 82 girls.

According to Aisha Alhassan, minister of Women’s Affairs and Social Development, the government is taking the negotiations for the remaining girls ‘very seriously’.

“We [the government] will not relent until all are back,” she told reporters on Thursday.

The government said that there are still more than 110 girls missing.

Alhassan also gave an update on the 82 freed girls, who are currently under government care in the capital of Abuja.

She said that the girls are currently undergoing medical and psychological screenings which should continue for the next few weeks. She also said that some of the girls have had to undergo surgery.

Families of the abducted girls have been anxiously reviewing photos that the government released of the freed girls, hoping to see their own daughters.

Alhassan also said that the government has no regrets about exchanging five captured Boko Haram militants in exchange for the girls and that they will pursue the release of the remaining girls with the same focused intent.
