Nigeria: Chinese Billionaire Donates Medical Gear
Amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Nigeria has received a glimmer of hope in the form of donated medical equipment.
The west African country currently has 51 confirmed cases of the disease, with the death toll sitting at one.
With a population of over 190 million, along with an ailing healthcare infrastructure in place, experts believe that the number of Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases will increase exponentially.
Speaking to a media outlet, Abdulaziz Abdulla – Nigeria’s top health official – confirmed that the country had received a large medical donation from China’s richest man, billionaire Jack Ma.
According to Abdulla, Ma – the founder of Chinese e-commerce company, Alibaba – donated 100 000 face masks, 1 000 protective gowns and 20 000 COVID-19 test kits to Nigeria.
These will be distributed to frontline health workers and hospital laboratories. Ma has also promised to donate equal amounts of this equipment to all 54 countries in Africa.
