Nigeria: Buhari Wins Presidential Elections

February 27, 2019

After a long-delayed poll, Nigeria’s electoral commission has declared President Muhammadu Buhari the winner of a second term in office.

Receiving more than 15.1 million votes, (56%), Buhari – who first took office in 2015 and leads the All Progressives Congress (APC) – was declared the winner of the presidential election early this morning.

He triumphed over his nearest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, who only secured 11.3 million votes (41%).

Per media reports, the election had been marred by violence – including 53 deaths – and a week-long postponement, which discouraged some people from turning out to vote at the polling stations.

Speaking to the celebrating masses at the APC’s campaign headquarters in Abuja, Buhari declared: “The new administration will intensify its efforts in security, restructuring the economy and fighting corruption.”

He added: “We will strive to strengthen our unity and inclusiveness so that no section or group will feel left behind, or left out.”
