Nigeria: Buhari Pleads With Militants to Stop Oil Pipeline Attacks
Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, has pleaded with militant rebels in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region to stop the destruction of various oil pipelines in the region in order to get the country’s oil production back on track.
Speaking at a recent event that commemorated the 20th Anniversary of Nigerian Agip Oil Company’s Green River Project Farmers Day, Buhari appealed to the militants in the Delta region to stop the destruction and rather ‘embrace the agriculture’ opportunities.
These rebel militants have been systematically destroying oil as well as gas pipelines in the region as a protest to the government.
However, these attacks have led to a deprived economy and has effectively helped the Nigerian economy enter into a recession, because of the lack of oil production which has been a main source of income for Nigeria.
Buhari assured people – and more directly the militants – in the Niger Delta region that the Nigerian government would do everything they can to help the region reach their agricultural potential.
“…I urge you to take advantage of the huge potential in agriculture and stop the destruction of oil and gas pipelines, which only serve to destroy our ecosystem and economy,” Buhari said.
Buhari also assured the people in the Niger delta area that there were more agricultural opportunities in the area than just gas and oil, and that the government will work hard to help the people benefit off all of them.
