Nigeria: 19 Lives Lost over Fishing Spot Fight

April 16, 2020

A dispute over an isolated fishing pond in the northeastern state of Tabara, Nigeria, has led to increased police presence in the area.

Nigerian citizens in the region rely on fishing in the riverine to eke out a living, but the longstanding feud between the two Shomo and Jole factions has resulted in deadly conflicts.

According to Taraba State’s police spokesperson, at least 19 people have been killed since Sunday, 12 April, while many others have been wounded.

Several homes have also been set alight during clashes between the opposing communities.

A handful of reports suggest that there may be a higher number of casualties and individuals wounded – due to both sides viciously claiming the fishing pond in the Lau area – but these have yet to be confirmed by local authorities.
