New Zealand: 49 People Dead in Mass Shootings
At least 49 people have been killed and 20 wounded after at least one gunman attacked two separate mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in an act of terrorism.
Early on Friday afternoon, 15 March, an armed gunman opened fire on worshippers at the two mosques, which are located in the city’s Riccarton and Linwood suburbs.
In extremely graphic video footage, men, women and children in one of the mosques are seen being shot from close range by the gunman, who live-streamed the footage to Facebook.
A witness at the Masjid Al Noor mosque in Riccarton described the gunman as white, blonde, and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest.
Christchurch went into lockdown as the police searched for the gunman. They later arrested an Australian man in his late twenties who espoused extremist views. He will appear in court tomorrow morning.
Three men and a woman were also detained, although the police are still investigating if they are connected to the shootings.
