Nepal: Monsoon kills over 100, Leaves 1000s Displaced

Heavy rainfall – which started last Thursday, 11 July – brought on by monsoon season, has lead to major flooding and dangerous mudslides across most areas of Nepal.

Many districts have been hard-hit, especially parts of Kathmandu, Kalanki, Kupondole, Kuleshwor and Balkhu.

According to reports, at least 78 people have been killed, with 40 injured and more than 30 are said to be missing since Friday, 12 July.

The Nepal police released a statement on Monday, 15 July, stating that at least 1 445 people have been rescued. It is estimated that over 17 500 have been displaced since last week.

Parts of northern India have also been affected, with 19 deaths in Assam and 24 in Bihar.

Nepal endures an active monsoon season during the months of July and August – experiencing as much as 350 millimetres in total for each month – but the current predictions claim to see as much as 50 to 150 millimetres each day.
