Neill Blomkamp directing new ‘Alien’ film

February 19, 2015

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp set the internet ablaze when he posted some Alien concept art on his Instagram account in January. Many fans expressed their enthusiasm over this and practically begged Blomkamp to direct a new Alien film.

Then about a month later, the South African director himself hinted that he might be up for directing an Alien film, and that the studio (20th Century Fox) are keen to make it.

Now, Blomkamp has officially confirmed that an Alien film will indeed be his next project. The confirmation comes in a form of a tweet which you can view below:

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien http://t.co/QO5WrH2d6x

Variety then confirmed this with Fox and found out that this new Alien film will be "separate" from Prometheus 2 which is also in development. However, Variety reports that Ridley Scott – director of Prometheus and the original Alien – will produce both films.

For those who are unaware, Prometheus is based on the Alien films and, according to Ridey Scott, takes place in the same universe. In fact, the creature featured at the end of Prometheus resembles the Alien Xenomorph featured above.

Variety also stated that inside sources are saying that this upcoming Alien film "takes place years after the Prometheus sequel".  However, inside sources aren’t always to be believed, so please take this piece of information with a grain of salt.

There’s no word yet if Alien alum Sigourney Weaver would be reprising her role as Ellen Ripley as the character was prominently featured in Blomkamp’s concept art.
