Nairobi Classroom Collapses, Kills 7 Children

September 23, 2019

A classroom in Nairobi, Kenya has collapsed early this morning, Monday 23 September, resulting in the deaths of at least seven children whilst injuring scores of others.

According to sources, the Precious Talent Top School – located in the Kenyan capital and has over 800 children enrolled – fell in on itself at approximately 7:30AM local time this morning.

Cyrus Oguna, spokesman for the government, said: “There have been 57 students that have been taken to hospital for treatment, and we can also confirm that there have been seven fatalities.”

Emergency services are scrambling to rescue those pupils still trapped under the rubble.

Kenya has several fast-growing communities, but the construction that happens in these areas is poorly regulated: many use inferior materials to build, such as the corrugated metal and low-grade wood used to construct the two-storey school.

A six-storey residential block in Nairobi came crashing down after heavy rains in 2016, killing 51 people.
