The Mugabes in Singapore for Medical Checks

September 17, 2018

Former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, and his wife Grace have reportedly been flown out of the country for emergency medical checks in Singapore.

According to news outlets, the couple and their aides departed early on Sunday morning on a plane chartered by the Zimbabwean government.

Both Robert, 94, and Grace, 53, frequently flew to Singapore for their medical visits during the former’s 37-year presidency.

Mrs Mugabe is reportedly suffering complications from an appendectomy she had in 2015, and sources close to the couple say that her health is deteriorating quickly.

The former First Lady was reported to be unwell and in Singapore last month. She was still there when her 83-year-old mother, Idah Marufu, died in Harare on 30 August.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s former leader has long been rumoured to be battling prostate cancer.

Their departure comes a few weeks after President Emmerson Mnangagwa spent more than half a million US dollars on a chartered jet to fly Mrs Mugabe home to attend her mother’s funeral.
