Mugabe Welcomes First Grandchild
Officials in Zimbabwe and some of president Robert Mugabe’s cabinet members have started to congratulate the 92-year old on the birth of his first grandchild.
We reported last week that Mugabe’s daughter with wife Grace Mugabe – Bona – was heavily pregnant with her first child.
Bona is married to pilot Simba Chikore and, while no one is sure where the two are residing currently or where Bona gave birth, it is suspected that the couple and new born baby are in Dubai.
A Zanu-PF MP for Highfield West in Harare, Psychology Maziwisa, was one of the first to congratulate the president on the birth of his first grandchild.
He wrote on Facebook:
“…Congratulations to Bona and Simba Chikore on the birth of their baby boy. I’m absolutely delighted for them…Wishing them lots of excitement, happiness, and hopefully some sleep!” his post read.
While the president has yet to confirm the birth himself, according to the Standard newspaper, Prisca Mupfumira – who is the minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare – announced and confirmed the birth on Saturday at a ruling party meeting.
According to the Standard newspaper, Bona had given birth to a baby boy. The newspaper also said that Mupfumira announced that the baby had been born to the family of Gushungo.
Gushungo is Mugabe’s clan name.
While Mugabe may be delighted about the birth, many Zimbabweans are frustrated at the fact that the Mugabe’s seek medical attention overseas and not locally in Zimbabwe.
This is because the Zimbabwean public health system is in bad shape. However, Zimbabweans are forced to make use of the failing system as they have no other choice.
