Mugabe Meets With Burundi Special Envoy

January 27, 2016

According to various reports, President Robert Mugabe has met with a special envoy of Burundian President, Pierre Nkurunziza, in Harare yesterday.

The meeting happened just as Mugabe is set to head up to the upcoming African Union (AU) summit in Ethiopia.

According to Zimbabwe’s Herald newspaper – which is owned by the state – Mugabe met with Nkurunziza’s chief-of-staff, Major-General Everest Ndayishimiye, who apparently briefed him on any new political developments and movements in Burundi.

The meeting is said to be a sort-of follow up on a peace keeping meeting that was rejected by the Burundi president last year.

The peace keeping missions was proposed by the African Union to help Burundi last year after the death of more than 400 people and displacement of close to 200 000 citizens.

It is also believed, in relations to recent happenings, that one of the main agenda’s of the upcoming African Union summit is to convince Burundi to accept the help and peace keeping mission of the AU.

However, it is also believed that Burundi will once again be stubborn in accepting the peace keeping proposal from the AU.

It is also the last tome the President Robert Mugabe will be the chairman of the AU, as he will relinquish his position at the upcoming summit.

The summit takes place on January 30 and 31st in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
