Mugabe Interview Rescheduled For 28th Feb
President Robert Mugabe – who recently celebrated his 92nd birthday – has announced that he has rescheduled his annual ‘birthday interview’ for the 28th of February.
According to various newspapers, the interview, which traditionally takes place on the eve of his birthday (February 21), will now take place on Sunday, 28 February.
This means that the interview will now take place after Mugabe’s lavish public birthday celebrations.
George Charamba, the presidential spokesperson told reporters that the interview had to be rescheduled because the President had more important issues at hand than the annual interview:
“…the interview will come after Masvingo (where the lavish birthday celebrations will be held) and will allow the president to reflect on his life and contemporary development,” Charamba said.
He also said that Mugabe was expecting a lot of high-profile visitors in this time that he would have to make time for, hence his schedule being shifted around.
Mugabe is planning a a huge public celebration of his birthday on Saturday in Masvingo close to national heritage landmark Great Zimbabwe.
The celebration has been scrutinised as the country is in financial turmoil, with the president then deciding to throw a birthday celebration that is reported to exceed $1 million.
Mugabe has been celebrating his birthday with a huge public celebration since 1986. He asks fellow ZANU-PF ministers and prominent businessmen in the country to donate to his birthday so that he can afford to have the lavish affair.
