Mugabe Celebrates 92nd Birthday

February 22, 2016

Yesterday saw President Robert Mugabe celebrate his 92nd birthday – and amidst calls for the ageing President to call off lavish celebrations for his birthday, things went ahead as planned with a over-the-top celebration.

Yesterday, which is the Presidents actual birthday, saw close friends and family of Mugabe get together for private celebrations. The big celebrations – namely a public birthday celebration day – is scheduled for Saturday, 27 February in Masvingo.

The celebrations will held near Great Zimbabwe – a historic and famous landmark of the country.

Mugabe has been celebrating his birthday publicly (with huge celebrations in tow) for the past 30 years. The first time he celebrated his birthday with a lavish public celebration was n 1986.

It is believed that the budget for his birthday stretched way passed the $1 million. However, this could not be proven as the budget was never made public.

It is also reported that ZANU-PF politicians and prominent businesspeople paid from $5,000 to $100,000 for a table of 10 at a dinner Friday night to raise funds for the birthday festivities this coming weekend.

Naturally, Mugabe’s lavish birthday celebrations are seen as extremely controversial; considering the fact that the rest of the country is in shambles.

Zimbabwe has been heavily affected by a non-existent economy and more recently, a devastating drought that has left thousands upon thousands of people without food or drinking water.

However, it seems that calls for the public celebrations have fallen on deaf ears as ministers and businessmen continue to support the lavish celebrations.
