Mozambican Child Killed by Cyclone Dineo
A falling tree killed a child in the Mozambican town of Massinga when cyclone Dineo hit the area on Thursday.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS), reported that the tropical cyclone, named Dineo, reached Inhambane, in the south of Mozambique, on Wednesday night. The cyclone’s impact was felt immediately, battering the area with winds in excess of 100 km/h, torrential rainfall and violent seas.
Mozambique’s National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) sent out an alert earlier in the week urging locals to prepare themselves for the storm. They encouraged the people to store food, and seek safe shelter.
Despite the warning and preparation, reports state that at least four lives have been claimed so far by the cyclone. Being one of the poorest countries, Mozambique’s economy and people often suffer dreadful consequences to these kinds of natural disasters. In 2000, for example, floods devastated the country and over 800 people were killed. At the beginning of this year alone, over 44 people lost their lives due to severe flooding.
