Mourinho Praises United After Defeating West Ham

August 14, 2017

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has praised his team for “playing with confidence” during yesterday’s match against West Ham.

It was United’s first match of their 2017/2018 English Premier League campaign, and the Red Devils couldn’t have asked for a better start.

United beat West Ham at home at Old Trafford 4 – 0, their biggest win in the English Premier League in nearly four years.

The star of the match was undoubtedly new member, Romelu Lukaku, who scored the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute. After half-time, Lukaku once again proved his star power by scoring the second goal in the 52nd minute.

Leading with two goals, United’s confidence was boosted, and they really started to play.

In the closing minutes of the game, Anthony Martial scored United’s third goal, in the 87th minute, before Paul Pogba scored in the 90th minute, bringing the Red Devils’ total to four goals.

After the match, Mourinho said that while the game started out as difficult, his team quickly pulled together as their confidence grew.

“It was a difficult game for us…We didn’t start especially well, maybe we were a bit nervous, but then we had a quality performance, good personality and word which I like: confidence [sic],” Mourinho told reporters.

Manchester United’s stunning first match has put them on top of the log. Mourinho knows from previous experience, however, that in a league as tough as the EPL, this doesn’t necessarily mean anything at this early stage.

“The fact we start with a win and are top of the league means nothing. Last season we were also top after the first match and we finished sixth so it means nothing. The level of performance means something to me. We lost two points against West Ham last season here and had lots of similar matches where we were dominant but didn’t score enough goals. Today we did and we got three important points,” he said.
