Moroccan YouTuber Calls Out King, Gets Arrested

December 05, 2019

A YouTube personality from Morocco has been arrested for publishing a video in which he allegedly criticises the both country’s king and its citizens.

Mohamed Sekkaki was arrested on Saturday, 30 November, and subsequently charged with “using degrading terms towards the Moroccan people … and expressing prejudice against public institutions” – just a day after he shared the 12-minute video to his YouTube account.

In the video, Sekkaki allegedly criticises King Mohammed VI, who is regarded as being beyond public criticism. The YouTuber is heard saying that the king’s speeches are useless and not even written by him.

In another section of the video, Sekakki apparently lectures his fellow Moroccan citizens for being “stupid and uneducated”, and for only caring about body enhancements, rather than voting for qualified people to represent them.

Sekakki’s arrest comes a month after Morrocan rapper, Gnawi, was sentenced to one year in prison for insulting the country’s security services in a social media video.
